Food & Drink

Dining at Highbury Nursing Home

We provide delicious meals, freshly prepared on-site by our chefs. All meals are prepared using seasonal ingredients on a rotating menu, repeated twice per season, for optimal health and taste. In addition to our main meals, staff are on hand to prepare snacks and drinks at any time during the day.

Fresh fruit and vegetables feature daily and our chefs take pride in presentation. During residents meetings, food satisfaction regularly receives a high approval rating from residents.

Our chefs, Bob and Tom, are happy to cater to residents who would prefer something different from the planned menu. For residents who have difficulty swallowing food, we offer puree diets that are just as tasty and varied as our main menu. Families are also welcome to bring in recipes that a resident has enjoyed at home for our chefs to replicate in the kitchen.

Enjoying meals together is good for the soul and relatives are welcome to join residents for a meal at any time. If possible, please let our chefs know in advance.

Our kitchen has a current Food Hygiene Certificate issued by Birmingham City Council, rated at 4H.

Welcoming our Autumn Menu

Our Head Chef is preparing the Autumn menus which will come in place from 14 September. His team always look for “clean plates” and if anyone is not eating well. He and weekend chef Tom always have plenty of ideas to promote appetites.

In warmer weather, Bob tells us “watermelon smoothies” are always a hit and good for hydration. Now, as we progress into the cooler months he is talking about toasted teacakes with plenty of butter, hot chocolate or milk with cinnamon to encourage good nutritional intake.

Bob along with the nursing staff did “Food First Campaign” training last year with Birmingham CCG. The home is committed to ensuring that meals are tasty, enriched, varied and that food is first-line management with those with poor appetites rather than supplements. That being said, we do have our own “Highbury Supershake” to boost calorific intake as needed when people living with dementia become frailer.
